11 Using grassroots quality improvement efforts to reduce bronchiolitis length of stay and save $1.2M

Description
We discuss using financial variation analysis to identify bronchiolitis as an opportunity for cost reduction at a pediatric hospital. We used surveys and clinical reports to measure clinical practice variation, and we implemented multiple PDSA’s to reduce variation in care. As a result, we improved mean length of stay by 10.5 hours over 12 months (figure 1), saving 469 patient days and $1.24 million without increasing readmissions (figure 2). We will explore using financial data to highlight clinical priorities and show that robust quality improvement (QI) methodology can result in significant improvements in throughput and cost of care.
