13 Driven to ZERO CAUTI: using the IHI driver diagram to steer committee goals

Description
At Northern Arizona Healthcare, an interdisciplinary committee was formed to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Driver Diagram tool was the method of choice for identifying key contributing factors to reducing CAUTI. This tool provided much needed focus for the team. Post implementation, our CAUTI Standard Infection Ratio improved from the 48th percentile to the 16th percentile in 2.5 years (figure 1). We will show how a Driver Diagram can be used for identifying, tracking, and measuring complex factors to achieve a common goal.
