The Structural Relationship among Social Support, Relative Deprivation and Hopelessness: Focused on the Men in their 50s ", Asia-pacific Journal of Convergent Research Interchange, KCTRS, ISSN : 2508-9080 (Print); 2671
This study focuses on the high suicide rate among men in their 50s and suggests strategies to reduce hopelessness, which has been reported to have a significant impact on suicide. We used data from the "2024 Study on Hopelessness Factors in Middle-aged" conducted by A University Research Institute in Seoul. The results of the analysis showed that first, social support from family reduces hopelessness. The second is relative deprivation, which increases hopelessness.Third, social support from family and friends increases hopelessness. The fourth, social support from family and friends, was a factor in reducing hopelessness. Finally, the role of relative deprivation in the relationship among family and friends, social support, and anhedonia was examined. The results showed that relative deprivation partially mediated the relationship between social support from family and hopelessness. Therefore, to reduce hopelessness in middle-aged men, it is necessary to reduce relative deprivation and the direct influence of family support.Based on the above findings, we emphasized the need for services and programs to increase the cohesion of family relationships and suggested job programs to reduce relative deprivation.Furthermore, this study's limitations are discussed, and future studies are challenged.
