The Factors Influencing the Community Resilience after Disaster

This study is to discover the factors influencing the community resilience after disaster.Community resilience is a phenomenon that refers to how quickly a community recovers its daily functions after a disaster, and is a concept that closely affects the lives of community residents.Previous studies on disasters have focused on the negative impacts of disasters on communities, especially on the destruction of community infrastructure and damage to life and property. However this study introduces the recently emerging concept of resilience to discover factors that affect the recovery of community functions after a disaster. To achieve the purpose of this study, data from the 2022 disaster damage recovery level survey of National Disaster Management Research Institute was used, and the response of 3,016 were analyzed. For the analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS Win 29.0.The results of the study are as follows. In terms of sociodemographic characteristics, the period of residence of community positively affected community resilience; in terms of disaster characteristics, heavy rain had a more positive effect on resilience than typhoons or forest fires; in terms of moving residence experience, it had a more positive effect when returning after moving; and in terms of whether community facilities were destroyed, it had a more positive effect when facility restoration was completed. And, in terms of community characteristics, when there is not occurred conflicts within the region, the higher the positive evaluation of neighboring communities, the higher the social support of neighbors, the higher the cooperation of local government members in overcoming crises, the higher the satisfaction with the level of disaster response within the region, and the more positive the evaluation of regional disaster safety after the disaster, the higher the community resilience was found to be.
