Exploring Healthcare Challenges and Stress Management in the Isolated Maritime Environment: A Qualitative Study on Seafarers’ Experiences
This study investigates seafarers' health and medical management encounters, mainly focusing on their constraints and difficulties in isolated maritime settings. This study examines the health challenges commonly experienced by seafarers, the maintenance of onboard medical resources, and the efficiency of emergency procedures through qualitative research conducted via in-depth interviews with ship captains and medical officers. The results indicate notable limitations in the training and skills of onboard medical managers, who frequently face the challenge of managing intricate medical situations with limited training. Moreover, common health problems such as gastrointestinal distress, dehydration, and symptoms of the common cold are frequently observed; however, access to medical services is often insufficient. The study underscores the limitations of the Telemedicine System (TMAS) for seafarers who rely on remote medical guidance that may not be adequate for managing critical medical crises.Additionally, the research showcases the mental health difficulties experienced by seafarers due to prolonged isolation and restricted availability of stressrelief methods, intensifying issues such as stress and burnout. To guarantee the safety and well-being of seafarers, it is essential to enhance mental health support systems, expand access to medical resources, and improve medical training on ships. These findings emphasize the necessity for extensive reforms in maritime health management.
