Cognitive metaphor as a way to implement the emotive function of language in political discourse (based on speeches by Donald Trump and Margaret Thatcher)

The purpose of the study is to identify the emotive-suggestive potential of cognitive (conceptual) metaphor as one of the ways to implement the expressive function of language in English-speaking political discourse using the example of texts of speeches by British and American statesmen. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time the suggestive potencies of a conceptual metaphor as a means of exerting emotional influence on the addressee are analyzed through the prism of the communicative and target specificity of political discourse. The novelty is also due to the low degree of knowledge of the functional capabilities of metaphor in political texts. As a result of the study, it was found that cognitive metaphor as a mental-linguistic phenomenon has, due to its dual nature, a vividly expressed suggestiveness. The metaphorical transfer of the properties of concrete objects to abstract entities affects not only the conceptual sphere, but also the internal state of the cognizing subject, contributing to the realization of the emotive and expressive function of language in the process of political communication.
