Revised WHO definition of ‘a case of leprosy’ and its impact
Updating and implementing new diagnostic criteria for leprosy is considered a part of the requisite steps in the global effort to control and ultimately eliminate this ancient disease. Historically, the basis for the diagnosis of leprosy has relied on clinical signs and skin smear findings. Over the past few years the criteria for diagnosing ‘a case of leprosy’ have been revised by WHO, in keeping with the realities on the ground, and this is usually adopted by National leprosy programs. This article examines the changes in the diagnostic criteria for leprosy and their possible implications.
