El don que resiste: resto y reducción frente a la metafísica de la presencia

How does Jean-Luc Marion’s notion of “gift” and Jacques Derrida’s idea of “rest” relate to each other? Can we assert that the gift, in its three reductions, operates as a “rest” against the metaphysics of presence? And does this operation result in a closer approximation of the gift to donation itself? This article aims to answer these questions through a hermeneutical reading of Marion's reduction of the gift in Étant donné, the outcome of which (or one of which) is the possibility of understanding the gift as a "present without presence" that resists metaphysics and functions as a “rest”.

Abstract

How does Jean-Luc Marion’s notion of “gift” and Jacques Derrida’s idea of “rest” relate to each other? Can we assert that the gift, in its three reductions, operates as a “rest” against the metaphysics of presence? And does this operation result in a closer approximation of the gift to donation itself? This article aims to answer these questions through a hermeneutical reading of Marion's reduction of the gift in Étant donné, the outcome of which (or one of which) is the possibility of understanding the gift as a "present without presence" that resists metaphysics and functions as a “rest”.
