An Approximate Multiplier Design Based on Mitchell's Algorithm

Approximate computing, as an emerging computational paradigm that improves energy efficiency at the cost of accuracy loss, provides a new approach for energy-efficient design of fault-tolerant systems. In this paper, a new logarithmic approximation multiplier based on Mitchell's algorithm is proposed and compared with several different exact and approximation multipliers, demonstrating improvements in power consumption.

Abstract

Approximate computing, as an emerging computational paradigm that improves energy efficiency at the cost of accuracy loss, provides a new approach for energy-efficient design of fault-tolerant systems. In this paper, a new logarithmic approximation multiplier based on Mitchell's algorithm is proposed and compared with several different exact and approximation multipliers, demonstrating improvements in power consumption.
