Throughput Maximization for Wireless-Powered Hybrid Bit-Semantic Communications

We have developed a model for a wireless powered bi-modal communication system that dynamically switches between conventional and semantic communication to leverage the strengths of both. The energy harvesting (EH) information transmitter (EHIT) achieves a minimum guaranteed equivalent or semantic rate regardless of the communications mode, although it may occasionally experience communication outages during deep fading in the wireless channel. Using the channel state information, the energy broadcasting information receiver (EBIR) applies a mode selection policy that maximizes semantic throughput with outage. The EBIR selects the appropriate communication mode based on the channel conditions and informs the EHIT through a 1-bit feedback channel, while the durations of the EH and information transmission (IT) phases remain fixed throughout the communication session. The proposed scheme ensures simple system operation while maintaining the throughput of the best-performing mono-modal (either BitCom or SemCom) system.
