Apparent Power Analysis in Transformers of the Faculty of Engineering: A Case Study

In this study, we evaluated the energy efficiency of two electrical transformers from the Faculty of Engineering of the Universidad Veracruzana. Through precise voltage and current measurements, we determine the apparent power of each piece of equipment and compare it to its rated capacity. The results reveal that while one transformer operates close to its optimal capacity, the other presents significant underutilization. This disparity in performance suggests the need for more efficient management of electrical load in the faculty. By analyzing the data obtained, we identified clear opportunities to enhance the use of these strategic devices. We propose a number of measures, such as regular audits, implementation of monitoring systems, and possible resizing, to ensure that transformers operate efficiently and reliably. By optimizing the use of these ones, not only energy costs are reduced, but also their useful life is prolonged, contributing to the sustainability of the institution electrical infrastructure.
