A Study on the Subjectivity of Unmarried Men and Women Aged 30-35 Regarding Marriage

Objectives The purpose of this study is to utilize Q methodology to categorize the perceptions of marriage among unmarried men and women aged 30 to 35, and to explore the characteristics of each type. Methods To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 26 unmarried men and women aged 30 to 35 from January 9 to February 3, 2023, resulting in a total of 167 Q population statements and the selection of 30 Q sample statements. Additionally, a P sample of 30 unmarried men and women aged 30 to 35 was selected for the classification of the Q sample. The collected data were analyzed using the PC-QUANL program. Results The research results indicated that the subjectivity of unmarried individuals aged 30-35 can be classified into three types: the “Marriage Optimist,” who demonstrates a positive and optimistic perception of marriage while also showing a lack of consideration for the practical issues associated with it; the “Marriage Cautious,” who exhibits a careful attitude toward marriage, emphasizing economic preparation and expressing concerns about career development; and the “Marriage Value Emphasis,” who highlights the value of marriage while also having a clear awareness of the responsibilities and efforts that come with it. Conclusions Through this study, we focused on the perceptions of marriage among unmarried men and women aged 30-35, classifying and identifying their subjective perception structures. We hope that this research will serve as a foundational resource for developing education and policies aimed at unmarried individuals.
