First isolation of Leifsonia aquatica from a cat with pyothorax
Abstract Pyothorax is one of the most prevalent respiratory disorders affecting cats. In the case report, we aimed to reveal the clinical, ultrasonography and radiographic evidence in a cat with pyothorax, to identify bacteria from exudate obtained by thoracocentesis, and determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of the bacteria involved. Significant inflammatory patterns were seen in the blood, and the cat's radiographs indicated different outcomes. In this case, Leifsonia aquatica was isolated from purulent fluid obtained from a cat with pyothorax present. In the literature review, L. aquatica has not been reported to cause an infection in animals. In conclusion, our report gives further evidence of the capability of this aquatic bacterium to cause infections in animals.
