The African moss Trachypodopsis normandii (Hypnobryales: Trachypodaceae) – new to Asia
The moss Trachypodopsis normandii, thought to be endemic to Africa, has been discovered from Ponmudi Hills of southern Western Ghats in Peninsular India. This species was first collected by Normand in 1901 from West Africa which was described by Brotherus and Paris (1902). It was recollected by T.S. Jones in 1951 which was published by Taylor and P. de la Varde (1954). The subsequent collection was made by F. Müller (2023) after seventy years. Thus, the present discovery is only the third collection after the type and that too from Asia, a continent east of Africa. This discovery being a new record for Asia, a description, a photographic plate and a distribution map are provided to help bryologists discover the species elsewhere.
