Building Resilience towards Flooding in Mushin, Lagos State, Nigeria

The study examined building resilience towards flooding in Mushin, Lagos State,Nigeria. The researchers utilized both primary and secondary data for this study. They conducted personal interviews with residents in the study area and staff from relevant environmental agencies, preferably from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and the Lagos State Physical Planning and Development Authority (LASSPDA). The research population included the number of buildings in the selected flood-prone settlement areas identified through a reconnaissance survey. The researchers counted a total of 429 buildings using Google Earth maps. They recorded the number of buildings on each street within the study area and distributed questionnaires systematically across the streets. Therefore, due to time constraints, the researchers distributed 196 questionnaires representing the study area's sample size. They analyzed the data collected from the field survey using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study recommends scaling up flood control and management efforts, implementing disaster management strategies, and initiating climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives to increase the resilience capabilities of the environment and its components.
