Between words and cultures: proverbs about women in French and their translation into Romanian
The present article explores how proverbs about women are used in French and how they are translated into Romanian. Proverbs, as a form of folk wisdom, reflect the values of a culture. This article examines the cultural and linguistic nuances that influence the transmission of these paremiological utterances from one language to another. Focusing on specific examples, the article highlights the diversity of perceptions and stereotypes associated with women in these two languages. It highlights the challenges of cross-cultural translation, emphasising how proverbs can reflect different social attitudes and gender norms. The article provides an in-depth analysis of proverbs about women in French and Romanian contexts, highlighting the interactions between language, culture and gender perception. We also explore how these linguistic and cultural peculiarities can be preserved or adapted when translating proverbs about women from one language into another.
