A high throughput investigation of Al and Cr additions to the Ti-Fe system via diffusion couple technique, and the oxidation characteristics of a microstructural gradient

A diffusion couple of Ti-Fe-Al to Ti-Fe-Cr alloys was assembled to rapidly assess the effects of Al and Cr additions to the Ti-Fe binary system. The entire Ti-Fe-Al-Cr compositional and microstructural gradient was oxidised at 650 °C for various time periods. Multi-layered scales formed across the entire gradient, dominated by rutile-TiO 2 , but also containing discontinuous alumina-Al 2 O 3 and hematite-Fe 2 O 3 . A composition Ti-16Fe-4.5Al-5.8Cr (at%) corresponding to the bcc -B2 target microstructure was determined, and the stability of these oxides was evaluated through a standard thermodynamic methodology. The calculations suggest that secondary oxides do not form at the alloy/TiO 2 interface. • Diffusion couple evaluation of oxidation resistance in Ti-16Fe with Al/Cr gradient. • Ti-Fe-Al/Cr alloys with bcc matrix strengthened by ordered-bcc TiFe precipitates. • Multi-layered scales of TiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 oxides observed, dominated by TiO 2 . • Stability of oxides predicted using a thermodynamic methodology.
