Key challenges identified include lack of political commitment to sustainable transportation, insufficient investment in energy-efficient vehicles, and resource constraints. The study also highlighted the need to expand and modernize transport infrastructure to accommodate population growth and increased economic activities. Theoretical contribution. This research provides insights into the specific barriers to sustainable transport infrastructure development in an urban South African context. Practical implications. The findings underscore the importance of improved coordination among government entities, private sector participants, and communities to address challenges and achieve sustainable transport infrastructure development.
