Psychological Aspects of Stage Performance: a Pianist’s Perspective
This article discusses the psychological dimensions inherent in stage performance, particularly from the perspective of pianists, including the difficulties a pianist must face at individual stages in their preparation for a stage performance. The analysis commences by examining excerpts from a pianist’s diary with the objective of enumerating the emotions typically connected to a pianist’s stage performance. The article undertakes an analysis of the emotional constructs outlined within the aforementioned diary to deconstruct the stressors encountered during the preparation for a public performance and the performance itself, as well as to investigate the effect which mental states have on the pianist’s ability to manage their emotions and anxiety. It also discusses the pragmatic methods that seek to reduce anxiety, not only during the preparatory phase but also during a live performance. The article demonstrates that stage performance psychology plays a pivotal role in the musician’s ability to deliver a successful live performance.
