Adverse Effects of Covid-19, Globalization and Modern Day Slavery: Towards Interdependence, Solidarity and Radical Hospitality
Abstract The Covid-19 pandemic has made a significant impact on the world: its effects are not evenly distributed. For those who are vulnerable to being categorized as victims of modern-day slavery, the socio-economic disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic affected their lives in new and profound ways. It has aggravated their vulnerabilities and exposed systemic injustices. Examples of such can be found in the ongoing struggles of migrant workers. What might be appropriate theological reflections? This article aims to explore the adverse effects of Covid-19 pandemic, and the problems underlying the nexus of globalization and slavery (in various forms). The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the vulnerable sections of the people, which is understood as modern slavery. The task of a public Christian vocation in such circumstances is one of assessing what has happened and then affirming the interdependence and interconnectedness of the human community, solidarity and radical hospitality.
