A preliminary report on 2016 excavation at Fenglin Loc.1 in Fusong County, Jilin Province

<p indent="0mm">The Fenglin site is located on top of a mountain beam on the left bank of the Songhua River about 500 m east of Fenglin Village, Manjiang Town, Fusong County, Baishan City, Jilin Province, where Loc.1 is located in the saddle of the southern part of the mountain beam where the site is situated on a lower terrain, with the geographic coordinates of 41°57′54.3″N, 127°31′56.8″E. The site was discovered in 2014, and an archaeological excavation was carried out on Loc.1 in 2016, which unearthed 305 artefacts, with little change in the face of the tool industry between the early and late phases of the site, all belonging to the well-established blade and micro-blade industrial traditions, and showing good cultural continuity. The stone artefacts are mainly made of obsidian, the overall size is on the small side, and the types include microblade cores, blades, microblades, flakes, tools, chunks, and debris, etc. Among them, the microblade cores can be seen as wedge-shaped and boat-bottomed, and the tools are mainly burins, in addition to edge scrapers and pointed tools, etc. The OSL dating results limit the age range of the site to 11,000 to 24,000 years ago, which is in the late Upper Paleolithic stage, and the fact that two different types of microblade cores were found at the same time at the Fenglin site indicates that the site possessed a variety of mature microlithic technologies between 22,000 and 17,000 years ago, and the discovery makes up for the fact that the development of the microlithic technologies in the Changbai Mt. region has changed from the early pressing technology. This discovery makes up for the missing link in the development of microblade technology in the Changbai Mt. area, and is also of great value in exploring the adaptability of ancient humans to extreme environments during the LGM.
