Unlocking $291 Billion for the Ocean: Eoceans Integrates Research with Dissemination to Maximize Impact

The ocean and society are changing at unprecedented rates, creating an urgent need to protect and restore ocean health and equitable access. However, making informed decisions about ocean use has been nearly impossible due to the manual, siloed, and slow nature of monitoring, research, and knowledge dissemination. Scientific papers are outdated by the time they are published and remain static even if new data emerges. Through a meta-analytical approach involving literature reviews, thousands of interviews with stakeholders and rights holders, and 20 years of experience in the scientific field, we developed a new method and system that integrates data science with publication to keep our knowledge systems current and transparent. This patent-pending system, eOceans, was built to unlock an estimated $291 billion annually in time, effort, and data, to integrate various data types to enhance model complexity, and to facilitate ethical collaborations and accountability. It can be used by policymakers, managers, consultants, scientists, NGOs, communities, First Nations, fisheries, ecotourism, and governments, as well as platform-, data-, and observations-as-a-service companies to serve their customers. Ultimately, eOceans optimizes resource allocation and fosters ethical local to global collaboration, empowering the world to work together to save the ocean for a livable planet.
