Creep-Life Prediction Through Mathematical Parameterization in Low Creep HMPE Fibers for Offshore Mooring

This study investigates the creep-life prediction of high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) fibers used in offshore mooring systems. These fibers are relevant due to their high strength, low weight, and buoyancy, essential for deep-water installations. However, HMPE fibers face challenges regarding their creep behavior, which can lead to mechanical failures over time. The research focuses on two types of Low Creep HMPE fibers, one manufactured in Europe and the other in China. Through experimental creep-rupture tests, the study evaluates the performance of these fibers under various load and temperature conditions. The tests were conducted under four load conditions (50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% of the yarn's breaking load) and five temperature conditions (40°C, 55°C, 70°C, 85°C, and 100°C). This data is essential for developing mathematical models for creep-life prediction of HMPE fibers. Two models, the Larson-Miller and Orr-Sherby-Dorn methods, were used to construct the creep-life prediction model. These models incorporate stress-time-temperature relationships to evaluate the remaining useful life. The study aims to determine the creep-life prediction model, and which model provides a more conservative estimate. The results indicate that both fibers meet the high-performance standards required for offshore applications, with specific differences in their mechanical properties and creep behaviors. The Larson-Miller and Orr-Sherby-Dorn models provided valuable insights into the creep-life prediction and are equivalents. Both fibers exhibit good creep-life behavior, with the European fiber showing greater resistance to creep, while the Chinese fiber offers the best cost-benefit ratio, meeting all requirements under load and temperature conditions for offshore mooring. This research contributes to understanding HMPE fiber behavior in offshore mooring systems and offers foundation for future studies on improving performance and creep-life in marine environments.
