Comparative Analysis of Electromagnetic and Thermal Performances Between Consequent-Pole PM and Conventional SPM Motors for eVTOL

This paper presents a comparative study of conventional Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (SPMSMs) and Consequent-Pole Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (CPPMSMs). The CPPMSM design retains only the N-pole permanent magnets, replacing the S-pole magnets with silicon steel sheets in a consequent-pole structure. This approach aims to reduce the use of permanent magnets and lower overall manufacturing costs. The study focuses on the electromagnetic performance and thermal dissipation of CPPMSMs compared to conventional PMSMs. Finite element simulation results show that the consequent-pole can reduce the amount of permanent magnets by 25.5% with the same torque output, while there is no significant increase in loss and temperature rise, thus confirming the superior performance of the CPPMSM. This motor has promising applications in electric Vertical Take-off and Landing(eVTOL), where reducing the number of permanent magnets, lowering losses, and managing temperature rise are critical.
