Comparing Lateral and Vertical Spacing Action Applied To Arrival Air Traffic
Air traffic management (ATM) plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, orderly, and efficient flow of aircraft in the airspace. One of the most challenging phases of ATM is the arrival phase, where aircraft converge rapidly towards the final approach procedure on the landing runway. This paper explores the complexities of managing arrival sequences including some factors that contribute to the variability and unpredictability of air traffic situations. We review the available tools and strategies used by air traffic controllers (ATCs) to regularize traffic flow and resolve conflicts, focusing essentially on lateral separation and vertical separation. A comparative study is conducted between two primary strategies: one prioritizing spacing maneuver and the other emphasizing vertical separation. We model and simulate each strategy in a real-world traffic scenario, comparing their effectiveness and providing insights into optimal decision-making for ATCs
