Optimization of an Open-Source Based Turbidity Sensor for Deep-Sea Mining Application

This paper presents the optimization of an open-source-based turbidity sensor designed for monitoring turbidity in the context of deep-sea mining. The existing sensor exhibits an insufficiently low sensitivity in low turbidity ranges and is based on an overly complex manufacturing method. To address these issues, the sensor's transmitted light measurement is augmented with a scattering light measurement, leading to improved resolution and sensitivity. Furthermore the general design is enhanced to simplify production and improve reproducibility. The optimized sensor is subsequently evaluated through a series of tests, including calibration procedures, signal stability assessments, and pressure tank experiments. As a result, the optimized sensor shows significantly higher sensitivity in the low turbidity ranges, making it a valuable tool for precise turbidity measurement in deep-sea environments.
