Enhancing AUV Operability: A Foldable Docking Cone for Efficient Launch and Recovery of AUVs

The advancement of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) has significantly impacted marine operations, enhancing efficiency in seabed investigations and underwater structure examinations. UUVs, particularly Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), have become crucial in scientific research, commercial industries, and military operations due to their autonomous capabilities and advanced sensor systems. This study focuses on the critical Launch and Recovery (L&R) process of AUVs, emphasizing the development of automated, universally applicable, and resilient Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS) Based on the analysis of requirements for optimal LARS and the limitations of current LARS technologies, a novel funnel-shaped docking device is proposed. This new system guarantees steady and controlled underwater recovery while reducing the effects on wave-induced motions, enhancing automation and safety. Featuring a collapsible entrance and an adjustable clamping mechanism, the design can suit different types of AUVs. The goal is the development of a reliable and efficient LARS for mobile carrier platforms, addressing the primary challenges in modern marine environments.
