Abstract. This article deals with the way in which the message of Augustine of Hippo on the question of marital continence was perceived after the sack of Rome in August 410. It then seeks to relate the frantic search for salvation with the fear of a world in distress. Finally, it is through a comparative study that we can measure the degree of influence of Augustine's opinions on the subject of marriage on his correspondent Ecdicia.
