Indexing with Excel, Part 5. Conversions 3

A previous article described how formatted indexes that are available as Word files can be prepared so that they can be imported into Excel and how they can be manipulated into standard index tables for further editing and subsequent processing in dedicated indexing programs (DIPs). This article shows that indexes that are available as PDF files can also be imported into Excel after appropriate preparation. Although compared to indexes in Word format PDF indexes have some weaknesses that make further processing more difficult, Excel offers some very helpful tools for solving these problems.

Abstract

A previous article described how formatted indexes that are available as Word files can be prepared so that they can be imported into Excel and how they can be manipulated into standard index tables for further editing and subsequent processing in dedicated indexing programs (DIPs). This article shows that indexes that are available as PDF files can also be imported into Excel after appropriate preparation. Although compared to indexes in Word format PDF indexes have some weaknesses that make further processing more difficult, Excel offers some very helpful tools for solving these problems.
