Reforming the Local Self-Governance in Assam through the Assam Panchayat (Amendment) Act, 2023

With the election to the Panchayat in Assam approaching in November and December 2024, the recent amendment Act of Assam Panchayat (Amendment) Act, 2023, is getting much importance in the state.The Act has brought a significant shift in the local self-governance system at the grassroots and set some benchmarks for democratic, decentralized bodies.The Act discusses the structural changes aimed at the principal Act 1994 and advocates for a party-less election system to gaon panchayats.The present paper aims to discuss the key changes brought about by the Amendment Act and how it will change the existing patterns of democratic decentralization in Assam, especially in the rural local self-governance system.
