Impact of Breathlessness on Quality of Life in Obese Patients

Introduction: Obesity, defined as an individual with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater, is a global health concern that raises the risk of chronic diseases and mortality. It is divided into three levels: Class I (30-34.9), Class II (35-39.9), and Class III (≥ 40). Obesity mostly impairs respiratory function, which causes dyspnea and reduced exercise tolerance, reducing daily activities and perpetuating a cycle of inactivity and weight increase. This, in turn, might result in psychological suffering, such as depression, anxiety, and social isolation. Obesity has a significant impact on quality of life (QoL), with both physical restrictions and emotional issues contributing to decreased well-being. To increase total life satisfaction, effective obesity management should focus not only on weight loss but also on improving physical health and emotional well-being. Objective: To study the impact of breathlessness in obese patients. To study the difference in Quality of Life due to breathlessness. Methods: In this survey study, 334 obese women and men over 35 years old with a BMI <30 were recruited by a simple random sampling procedure. Individuals under the age of 35 were eliminated, as were those who experienced breathlessness due to a systemic medical condition. SF-36 questionnaires were used to assess people' quality of life. Result: The statistics demonstrate that breathlessness and physical limits differ between patients. Those participating in intermediate activities experience breathlessness, whilst those performing lesser tasks report no issues. Breathlessness causes minor restrictions in physical and emotional performance, but most patients feel energized and endure minimal pain during activities. Social functioning is moderately impaired, and while emotional well-being varies greatly, it is still subjective. Overall, most patients rate their general health as good, with many reporting no significant change in their health over the past year. In conclusion, while breathlessness and physical limitations affect daily living, the majority of patients maintain above overall health and energy levels. Conclusion: 1] The result shows that there is slight limitations of fumction activities due to breathlessness 2] The result shows that there is slight limitations of emotional problems due to breathlessness 3] This ghraph represents that there is moderate limitations of social functioning Keywords:BMI, Obese women and men, Breathlessness,Quality of life .
