Energy Inputs and Economic Analysis of Organic and Inorganic Rice Production in Agusan Del Sur, Philippines

The study was conducted to analyze cost and examine the energy inputs of organic and inorganic rice production in Agusan del Sur.A structured Questionnaire was utilized to gather relevant data from rice farmers through face-to-face interviews. The sample farms were chosen through a stratified sampling method. Results revealed that energy inputs in inorganic rice production were eight times higher than that of organic farming due to the heavy use of inorganic fertilizer, which reached a total of 21,864.5 MJ/ha.Results also showed that the Energy efficiency and profitability in organic rice farming were higher than that of inorganic rice farming as indicated by their Output/Input Ratio (OIR)and Benefit-cost ratio, suggesting that inorganic farming has a lesser return than organic rice production. Moreover, fertilizer application in inorganic farms within the study area is significantly higher due to the heavy application of inorganic fertilizer.
