ERROS NO MANEJO NUTRICIONAL DE PSITACÍDEOS CRIADOS EM CATIVEIRO

Inadequate nutrition of captive psittacines is a frequent problem and is associated with several errors, such as diets rich in oilseeds and the lack of adequate supplementation. These errors can result in serious health conditions, including hepatic lipidosis, hypovitaminosis A, and hypocalcemia, affecting the well-being and longevity of these birds. The objective of this study is to evaluate, through field research, the knowledge of guardians about nutrition, identifying failures in feeding management and the risks associated with the provision of inadequate or toxic foods. In addition, this study also discusses the main errors in the nutritional management of psittacines, the specific needs of macronutrients and micronutrients, and the risks associated with the provision of inadequate or toxic foods. It also addresses the biological, feeding, and conservation characteristics of the order Psittaciformes, composed of parrots, macaws, and parakeets, and how inadequate management practices affect the behavior and health of these birds. Most participants reported feeding commercial feed to their birds, with 33% also feeding seed mixes, which are rich in oils and can cause liver disease. The results emphasize that the use of formulated feeds and the controlled supply of fruits, vegetables, and adequate supplementation can prevent nutritional problems and ensure the long-term health of captive parrots.
