Attachment and mental health utilisation: A police perspective

At present, many Police officers avoid support for mental illness due to perceived occupational stigma (POS), depleting their wellbeing and job satisfaction. The present study examined the predictive qualities of attachment type, attempting to identify those predisposed to avoiding support based upon help-seeking attitudes, intentions and POS. According to 153 survey responses, POS significantly mediates the relationship between help-seeking attitudes and intentions in both secure and insecure-avoidant UK Police officers. While attachment based predictions were not supported, findings do emphasise the significance of stigma, encouraging interventions to promote help-seeking behaviours, well-being and job satisfaction of Police officers.
