Failure Mode Analysis and Identification Method Based on the External Characteristics of DC Circuit Breaker

With the rapid development of high-voltage DC (HVDC) power transmission, DC circuit breaker (DCCB) has become an ideal DC fault isolation equipment, but it is prone to failure because of the various types and a large number of components in its topology. This paper studies the failure mode of the internal components, summarizes the failure characteristics of DCCB, and proposes a failure identification method based on voltage and current characteristics of DCCB. The simulation results of PSCAD/EMTDC show that the proposed method can effectively distinguish the DCCB internal component failure in real time.

Abstract

With the rapid development of high-voltage DC (HVDC) power transmission, DC circuit breaker (DCCB) has become an ideal DC fault isolation equipment, but it is prone to failure because of the various types and a large number of components in its topology. This paper studies the failure mode of the internal components, summarizes the failure characteristics of DCCB, and proposes a failure identification method based on voltage and current characteristics of DCCB. The simulation results of PSCAD/EMTDC show that the proposed method can effectively distinguish the DCCB internal component failure in real time.
