Small Power Magnetically Geared Generator Design for Rural Zones of Benin
In this paper, we present the sizing of a low-power direct-drive Magnetically Geared Generator (MGG). This MGG consists of a V-Shaped Permanent Magnets (V-SPM) integrated with a conventional Concentric Magnetic Gear (CMG). The aim is to provide low-cost electricity to people living in rural areas of Benin. To achieve this objective, six areas of Benin were selected as study zones. The wind profiles of these different zones reveal that 16 kW generators can be designed in the southern and central zones, while slightly more powerful 29 kW generators can be designed in the northern zone. Only the results of the sizing of the 16kW generator are shown here. Given the complexity of the system, we decided to size the V-SPM and the CMG separately, considering them magnetically decoupled. These two subsystems have the same length and the high-speed rotor in common to facilitate their integration. Sizing is based on analytical equations, followed by an electromagnetic analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The inner and outer torques of the CMG, the efficiency map of the V-SPM and the results of the MGG simulated in 2D transient magnetic operation are shown and analyzed.
