Sizing strategies for energy storage systems based on autonomy time and technical factors
The integration of renewable energy into the power system is progressing in a positive manner, with an increasing number of producers adopting this approach due to the advantageous properties inherent to this energy source. Conversely, the integration of renewable energy into electricity networks also gives rise to a series of adverse effects, largely due to the inherent unpredictability of the energy source, which gives rise to a series of imbalances. To significantly enhance the performance of the electricity distribution system where new renewable energy plants are connected, the integration of advanced energy storage systems (ESS) is being considered. These elements have the potential to markedly improve the impact of unstable generation. The objective of the implemented case study is to identify and analyze the main characteristics of ESS in response to autonomy time and technical factors. Based on the techno-economic calculations presented in the paper, this study consolidates the main requirements for sizing ESSs. The sizing methods were subjected to a series of tests and subsequently validated in the context of the present case study.
