Local elections offer no respite for Bosnia
Significance In contrast with previous local and general elections, the pre-election campaign had a more muted atmosphere and saw no great appetite among Bosnians for major reforms. Instead, local rivalries and clientelism dominated the campaign. Impacts Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency could decisively shift the power balance in BiH in Dodik’s favour. Local officials have mostly avoided blame for the floods, but they may face increasing criticism as natural disasters become more frequent. Despite holding ground in the polls, reformist parties will need policy achievements to secure re-election in 2026.
