Jordan's continued power-sector success faces hurdles
Significance After a period of power shortage and high prices, Jordan has been successful in diversifying its electricity mix, previously dominated by oil and gas. It is also increasing its interconnectedness to transfer surplus supply to Egypt, Iraq and the West Bank. Impacts Increasing the supply and export of reasonably priced, low-carbon power will help Jordan’s economy and its environmental credentials. An interruption of gas supplies or a spike in prices would be damaging to the economy, increasing the current account deficit. Solar and wind power capacity will increase but hydro capacity will fall as a share of renewables over time.
