Succession plans in Tajikistan may face rising risks
Significance Since June, the authorities have arrested a former foreign minister, former military commanders, journalists, civil society activists and others, all of whom are accused of planning to overthrow Rahmon. They include individuals critical of the regime and those who have always professed loyalty to it. Impacts Rustam Emomali’s limited political experience and lack of charisma make his candidacy vulnerable to contestation by domestic elites. The slowing economy may force Tajikistan to lean more heavily on its largest foreign lender, China. With Russia’s blessing, the CSTO is planning to roll out new policies aimed at enhancing security measures at the border with Afghanistan.
