Badenoch may struggle to survive as leader of UK party
Significance Badenoch hails from the more right-wing factions of the party but her leadership campaign was absent of policy detail, instead focusing on restoring party principles surrounding free markets and free speech. Badenoch’s election did not come with particularly strong backing from her parliamentary colleagues or the party’s dwindling membership. Impacts The Conservatives may have to contest by-elections in seats they hold before the May local elections. A boost in support for the right-wing parties could force the Labour government to adopt a more cautious policy towards the EU. Donald Trump’s US election victory will give a morale boost to right-wing forces, both in the United Kingdom and across Europe.
