Albanian opposition’s legal troubles mount
Significance The opposition -- led by the Democratic Party (PD) -- last month resumed its campaign of street protests, demanding the replacement of the Socialist Party (PS) government with a technocratic administration ahead of the next parliamentary elections, which are due by June 2025. Impacts If conducted impartially, the indictment of prominent politicians will contribute to reducing widespread corruption in Albania. Success in tackling corruption would help Albania overcome one of the main obstacles in its EU accession process. Progress in Albania’s EU accession talks will encourage more foreign investment, as legislation is aligned with EU standards.
