Petro energy stance to stand despite Colombia strains
Significance Climate risks have increased the vulnerability of Colombia’s hydroelectric-dependent energy matrix. The government has announced additional subsidies for consumers, more permits for renewables projects and increased gas imports to satisfy short-term demand. However, delays to new renewable projects and the government’s insistence on disallowing future oil and gas projects will exacerbate long-term challenges. Impacts Colombia will have enough energy, even in dry periods, but only through water rationing or gas imports. Limits on energy exports to Ecuador will help in the short term but do not address Colombia’s overreliance on hydropower. Expanding Colombia’s solar and wind capacity will likely involve substantial imports of equipment from China and European countries.
