An accurate characterization method of passive components for Very High Frequency power conversion applications
The successful design of Very High Frequency (VHF) power converters depends on the accuracy of passive components models. In this work, a 30 MHz 40 W class E inverter is simulated to emphasize the impact of the fabrication tolerance of the resonant passive components. A multi-layer ceramic capacitor (68 pF), two air-core inductors (22 nH and 360 nH), and a thick film surface-mounted resistor (1 Ω) are accurately characterized in the VHF range. The characterization method and the de-embedding process are thoroughly explained. Extracted model parameters are compared to the model specified by the manufacturer. The impact of the ground plane located under the air-core inductor on its impedance is evaluated in 2-port shunt-through configuration.
