Supplementary Learning: Toward Enriching Microlearning from a Design Perspective

Today, the new generation of learners differs considerably from their predecessors in how they consume information. In addition, the pervasive adoption of the internet in modern society and the abundance of data have significantly altered how information is accessed and consumed. Learners now expect to access information in small, bite-sized pieces instantly, anytime, anywhere, in easily digestible formats. Furthermore, long learning materials offered by both traditional and online learning can be overwhelming, dampening the desire to gain new knowledge. That said, microlearning has emerged as a solution that delivers information in bite-sized, easily digestible pieces. Despite its popularity, there is a notable dearth of research on effective strategies for capturing attention and enhancing motivation from a design perspective. This study explores the importance of design-oriented microlearning in fostering motivation and engagement, with a specific focus on integrating motivational design into microlearning modules. Additionally, we discuss the need for further research to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in real-world settings.
