Securing Mobile Finance: Trends, Mitigations, and Best Practice
Mobile financial systems have revolutionized access to banking and financial services, particularly in developing regions. However, the rapid adoption of these technologies has also exposed users to a range of cybersecurity threats, including advanced malware, exploitation of app vulnerabilities, and attacks tailored to specific regional vulnerabilities. This paper examines the evolving landscape of mobile financial system threats, focusing on emerging trends such as phishing attacks, mobile ransomware, and region-specific attacks that exploit local financial practices and regulatory gaps. We also explore the countermeasures that financial institutions and mobile service providers are deploying to safeguard users, including real-time monitoring systems powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, which have proven effective in detecting and mitigating fraud as it occurs. Through an analysis of current trends and case studies, this paper highlights the critical importance of cybersecurity in the ongoing development and deployment of mobile financial systems globally.
