Improved Quenching Circuit for a Single Photon Detector with Avalanche Photodiode

The paper deals with the problem of quenching the avalanche breakdown (AB) in avalanche photodiodes (APD) operating in Geiger mode and used in single photon detectors (SPD). The paper describes the problem of AB events that are sometimes missed by traditional quenching circuits (QC) and proposes an improved QC. Comparison of traditional and improved QCs in a real hardware is presented, showing the benefits of the improved circuit.

Abstract

The paper deals with the problem of quenching the avalanche breakdown (AB) in avalanche photodiodes (APD) operating in Geiger mode and used in single photon detectors (SPD). The paper describes the problem of AB events that are sometimes missed by traditional quenching circuits (QC) and proposes an improved QC. Comparison of traditional and improved QCs in a real hardware is presented, showing the benefits of the improved circuit.
