Integrating System Modeling with CFD Simulations to Define Design Points for Supercapacitor Module Optimization
This study introduces a method for coupling 1D system modeling with 2D/3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) component modeling for a super capacitor(SC) module with its results. The method aids in designing a natural/forced cooling system for the module, intended for use in combination with diesel generators and battery systems. The study outlines the module sizing process and focuses on its thermal aspects. Surface response functions are built based on CFD results and coupled with a system model using functional mock-up interface (FMU) modeling within Matlab Simulink. Unverified results of module dimensions and operating points are presented. The study’s outcome is a method for improving system models using 2D/3D CFD analysis, which can be applied not only to super capacitors but also to various novel component designs requiring complex cooling or heating architectures, such as battery modules or inverter modules.
