Subdomain Modeling of a Flux Switching Machine with Buried Permanent Magnets

A general 2D subdomain model (SDM) is created for a permanent magnet excited flux switching machine (FSM). The model features the conventional stator core topology with buried magnets. Therefore, the model takes into account that a highly saturated iron material surrounds the magnets. Burying the magnets reduces the average torque, but can have a positive effect on the mechanical structure, the cogging torque and the stability of the permanent magnets to withstand demagnetization. In addition, the model ensures a defined stator gap geometry. The aim is to obtain an accurate and rapidly computable model of an FSM with buried magnets for parameter studies and optimization processes. In addition to the derivation of the model equations, the results of the magnetic flux density, the linked flux of each phase and the torque are evaluated and compared with the results of 2D finite element (FE) analysis. To evaluate the performance, a parameter study is performed with the SDM model as well as FE analysis.
