A 3D Multiphysics Study of Different Channel Designs Of PEM Electrolyzer
The production of hydrogen through an electrolysis cell powered by green energy has garnered attention during the last decades. This study investigates the uniformity of distribution of variables in proton exchange membrane electrolysis cells (PEMEC), including current density, pressure, velocity, and molar fraction of species. Different channel shapes are considered in the 3D model created within COMSOL Multiphysics, considering multiphysics behaviors like mass transfer, phase transfer in porous media, fluid dynamics, and electrochemical reaction kinetics. Based on the obtained results, a particular multichannel configuration performs better than other configurations due to the fact that it lowers both singular and linear losses and increases distribution uniformity.
